The average American spends more than 90% of their time indoors,
making them susceptible to unsafe particles and allergens.
At Northeast Heating & Cooling, we are often asked by homeowners "How can I make the air in my home cleaner?"
Here's how:
Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned
Most homeowners have no idea what goes on inside their home's air ducts. But they can become littered with years of accumulated dirt, debris and allergens like pollen, dust and pet dander. An average household duct system (1,500sq ft) can circulate up to 40lbs of dirt, dust, mold, hair, dead insects and worse - in one year. Even new and remodeled homes aren't safe, mainly because builders leave on average 15lbs of debris in the ductwork from construction. This is because the ductwork is always installed before the rooms are finished and sheetrocked. All this dirt and debris left in your system create the perfect breeding ground for mold, mildew and bacteria. All having the ability to negatively impact your health.
Industry standards recommend that you have your air ducts inspected every 2 years for cleanliness. By having your air ducts cleaned regularly, you'll help improve the indoor air quality in your home, and enhance the efficiency of your heating/cooling system, reducing energy bills.

Expert Allergy Tips
Here are allergy experts’ tips for managing allergies and asthma in the home:
- Control dust mites — Use anti-dust mite covers and wash sheets in hot water at least once a week; 130 degrees is recommended.
- Eliminate mold sources – Fix leaky pipes and keep bathroom grout clean.
- Stay smoke-free — Avoid non-ventilated, smoky rooms and second-hand smoke.
- Avoid pet dander — Keep pets off the furniture, out of the bedroom, and if necessary, consider taking the pet out of the home.
- Close doors and windows — Keep windows and doors shut to keep outdoor pollens, molds and irritants outside.
- Install a whole-house air cleaner — An air cleaning system, such as Trane CleanEffects™ removes airborne particles and allergens too tiny for your nose and mouth to filter naturally.
In addition to taking steps to control allergens in the home, you should always see an allergist to determine the cause of your symptoms. An allergy specialist can run a series of simple blood or skin tests to determine if your asthma symptoms are allergy-related.
